“Maybe mistakes are what make our fate… without them what would shape our lives? Maybe if we had never veered off course we wouldn’t fall in love, have babies, or be who we are. After all, things change, so do cities, people come into your life and they go. But it’s comforting to know that the ones you love are always in your heart… and if you’re very lucky, a plane ride away” – Candace Bushnell, “Sex and the City”
Are you a Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, or a Charlotte? If you’re a Sex and the City fanatic then you will have an answer to that question. I’m a huge Sex and the City fan. I’ve probably seen every episode twice and I own both movies, which reminds me that I should watch them soon! I’ve always thought that I’m a Charlotte, but the older I get the more I start to realize that I’m a bit more like Miranda.
While in New York City a month ago I got the chance to do the Sex and the City Hotspots Tour with On Location Tours. On Location Tours is one of the world’s largest TV and movie tour companies with tours in multiple cities like NYC, Boston, and Washington DC. One of the most popular tours for obvious reasons is the Sex and the City Tour. Be prepared for a lot of fun, pink, and loud women!
Tours run daily and twice on the weekends in the morning and afternoon. The tour starts at the southeast corner of Central Park near several important scenes from both the show and the movies. You’ll pack onto a bus full of women and maybe a few brave or unknowing men. Our tour guide, a bubbly blonde actress named Lou, quickly introduced herself and got us underway.
We started on a whirlwind tour around Manhattan while Lou shared antidotes from the show as she pointed at the hotspots to us as we drove by them. Before each site she would play a short clip of the movie. Some were monumental moments like Carrie and Big’s wedding at the Public Library and little moments when Carrie saw a movie alone at the Paris Theater.
While you spend most of the tour on the bus driving around Manhattan taking in the various hotspots there are a few stops where you get to venture off the bus and explore a few hotspots. The first stop is the Pleasure Chest where Charlotte was first introduced to the Rabbit. You can walk through the surprisingly small shop and buy your own Rabbit or maybe just a Sex and the City photo book.
Next stop: Greenwich and the West Village to see Carrie’s stoop and eat cupcakes. The West Village is also a great place to spot celebrities! Lou even mentioned that she has seen and met Sarah Jessica Parker 6 times alone on the tour. She’s very friendly and you totally should go up to her and say “hi.” Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see her during our tour. After the quick stop at Carrie’s stoop where she was never actually allowed in the house, it was back on the bus.
Our final stop of the day was Scout, Steve and Aiden’s bar where we all indulged in cosmopolitans. Cosmos are famously expensive but thankfully the tour worked out a deal with the bar and cosmos are only $10. Drink up!
Overall I enjoyed the tour. It is run extremely well and Lou was incredible. I totally want her to be my new BFF. I loved how the tour includes snippets of scenes from both the TV series and the movies before we reached them as many of them I don’t remember off the top of my head. Like the friar. I loved the cupcake, but who doesn’t love cupcakes? I’m not a huge fan of bus tours. They just aren’t my jam. I much prefer to do walking tours, but Manhattan is a big city and making a Sex and the City walking tour would be next then impossible. I also think the tour is best for traveling with friends. Hello bachelorette parties! I did the tour solo as I was in NYC visiting a couple of male friends that would not have been caught dead doing a Sex and the City tour. I applaud the brave men that do! I would definitely love to do the Gossip Girl tour as I might be mildly obsessed with Blair Waldorf. Next time…
Thank you to On Location Tours for hosting me during the Sex and the City Hotspots Tour. Like always, my opinions are totally my own. If I hate something, you’ll know.
